Citrus is the oldest fragrance family and the most difficult to do well. Peel oils evaporate quickly: building a lasting fragrance around them without betraying that initial brightness is a technical challenge that few maisons truly solve.
Bergamot, neroli, petitgrain: they are three different things
Bergamot comes from the peel and is the most elegant citrus note: bitter, floral, with a tea-like facet. Neroli is obtained by distilling the flowers of the bitter orange tree, and is fresh and green. Orange blossom - or orange blossom absolute - comes from the same flower but is extracted with solvents, making it much sweeter and more honeyed. Petitgrain, finally, is distilled from the leaves and twigs: it is the most bitter and green of the four.
On paper, these differences may sound like textbook definitions; on skin, they are obvious to anyone within ten minutes.

Citrus fragrances for men and women
It is the most unisex fragrance family there is, and the numbers confirm it: people searching for “women’s citrus fragrances” and those searching for “men’s citrus fragrances” almost always end up looking at the same bottles. The useful distinction is another one - dry and bitter citrus (petitgrain, grapefruit) versus sweet and floral citrus (orange blossom, mandarin).
How to make it last. Citrus is the least persistent fragrance family of all: three or four hours is normal. Spray it on your clothes as well as your skin, and take it with you. It is not a flaw in the fragrance; it is the chemistry of peel oils.

Frequently asked questions
Why do citrus fragrances not last long?
Because the molecules in citrus oils are light and volatile: they evaporate within a few hours. The fragrances that last longer are built on a base of musk, amber or woods that “holds” the citrus note.
What is the difference between neroli and orange blossom?
They come from the same flower, the bitter orange tree, but are obtained through different extraction methods. Distilled neroli is fresh and green; extracted orange blossom is sweeter, honeyed and more intense.
Are citrus fragrances suitable only for summer?
They are perfect for summer, but a citrus fragrance with a woody or ambery base can be worn all year round. Citrus has less staying power in winter, so it is worth choosing one with more structure.
