Citrus is the oldest fragrance family and the most difficult to get right. Peel oils evaporate quickly: building a lasting fragrance around them without betraying that initial radiance is a technical challenge that few maisons truly solve.
Bergamot, neroli, petitgrain: three different things
Bergamot comes from the peel and is the most elegant citrus note: bitter, floral, with a tea-like facet. Neroli is obtained by distilling the flowers of the bitter orange tree, and is fresh and green. Orange blossom absolute - or orange blossom absolute - comes from the same flower but is produced through solvent extraction, making it much sweeter and more honeyed. Petitgrain, finally, is distilled from the leaves and twigs: it is the most bitter and green of the four.
On paper, these differences may seem like textbook definitions; on skin, they are obvious to anyone within ten minutes.

Citrus fragrances for men and women
It is the most unisex fragrance family there is, and the numbers confirm it: those searching for “citrus fragrances for women” and those searching for “citrus fragrances for men” almost always end up with the same bottles. The useful distinction is another one - dry, bitter citrus (petitgrain, grapefruit) versus sweet, floral citrus (orange blossom, mandarin).
How to make it last. Citrus is the least persistent fragrance family of all: three or four hours is normal. Spray it on your clothes as well as your skin, and take it with you. It is not a flaw in the fragrance; it is the chemistry of peel oils.

Why do citrus fragrances not last long?
Because citrus oil molecules are light and volatile: they evaporate within a few hours. The fragrances that last longer are built on a base of musk, amber or woods that “holds” the citrus in place.
What is the difference between neroli and orange blossom absolute?
They come from the same flower, the bitter orange blossom, but are produced through different extraction methods. Distilled neroli is fresh and green; extracted orange blossom absolute is sweeter, more honeyed and more intense.
Are citrus fragrances only suitable for summer?
They are perfect for summer, but a citrus fragrance with a woody or amber base can be worn all year round. In winter, citrus has less staying power, so it is best to choose one with more structure.
