The measurements that matter

How many water glasses do you need at home?
Six is the minimum for a regular table setting, eight if you often entertain. It is worth buying them all from the same range: glasses break, and being able to add two matching ones in two years is more useful than it may seem.
What is the difference between a highball and a long drink glass?
It is mainly a matter of capacity and proportions: a highball is tall and narrow, while a long drink glass is slightly wider and more capacious. In practice, they are used for the same drinks, and the choice depends on how much ice is added.
Can they be used for hot drinks?
No, not with tea or coffee: lead-free crystal is not designed to withstand thermal shock. For hot drinks, you need borosilicate glass, clearly labelled as such.
Does a thin glass break more easily?
Not in normal use. It breaks when it knocks against another piece in the dishwasher or is set down suddenly on a stone surface. When hand-washed, with a rack or mat in the sink, it lasts as long as a thick one.
