Tobacco in perfumery does not smell like a cigarette. It smells of dried leaf, honey, dried fruit and leather: it is the scent of an old-fashioned tobacconist's, not an ashtray. It is also one of the warmest notes there is, which is why it works almost exclusively in cold weather.
Leaf, honey and smoke
Tobacco leaf absolute is sweet and balsamic, with facets of hay and plum. When perfumers want real smoke, they do not use tobacco but birch or guaiac wood, which bring tar and burnt wood. The combination of the two - sweet leaf underneath, smoke on top - is the structure of almost all contemporary tobacco fragrances.

Thana Iftitan is the most literal: apple, smoke, cinnamon and tobacco over oakmoss, autumn in a bottle. Thana Tiryaq explores the smoky, earthy side, with lime and timut pepper in the opening to cut through the sweetness.
Nishane Fan Your Flames remains the classic of the genre: coconut, rum and mastic up top, tobacco and tonka bean at the heart, oakmoss and cedarwood in the base. It is a more indulgent than austere tobacco, and is therefore our best seller. Nishane Fan Your Flames X is its more recent version. At the opposite extreme, Nasomatto Black Afgano, where tobacco meets resins, coffee and oud in one of contemporary perfumery's densest compositions.
When it works
From October onwards, and in the evening. A tobacco note becomes suffocating within half an hour in summer, whereas at five degrees it opens up and stays close to the skin. It is also one of the few notes that works better on wool and cashmere than on skin.
A point we always make. If you are looking for something reminiscent of a cigarette, tobacco is not the right note: look instead for a fragrance with birch or guaiac wood, which is where the real smoke lies.

Autumn and winter. It is a warm, balsamic note that becomes heavy in warm weather, while in the cold it remains composed and close to the skin.
