Oud is the most expensive natural raw material in perfumery, and the most difficult to wear. Not everyone likes it, it isn't meant to appeal to everyone, and those who seek it usually already know why.
What oud really is
It is the resin produced by the Aquilaria tree to defend itself against a fungal infection. Healthy wood has no scent: only diseased wood is fragrant, and only after years. This explains the price, which for pure oil exceeds that of gold by weight, as well as the quantity of synthetic or reconstructed oud on the market.
On the nose, it is resinous, medicinal and animalic, with a wet-wood facet. In Arabic versions it remains raw; in European ones it is almost always softened with rose, saffron, amber or vanilla - and this is the entry point we recommend to those just starting out.
The ouds in our selection
The Spirit of Dubai Turath is the benchmark for the genre among those we carry: dried fruit, Damask rose, coffee and cinnamon over a base of oud and leather. The Spirit of Dubai Fakhama surrounds it with three roses and saffron, while Majalis takes it towards Arabic coffee and honey.
On the European side: Electimuss Octavian places saffron, pink pepper and rose over oud and amber, with a drier interpretation. Nishane Kredo pairs it with cardamom, osmanthus and suede. Pesade Oud Nights is the most straightforward and easiest-to-wear version.
How to wear oud
Very little. It's the rule we repeat every day in the boutique: one spray, never two, and never in a shared enclosed space. Oud projects for hours, and the wearer stops smelling it long before everyone else does. The right moment is in the evening, when it's cold.
If it's your first time. Don't start with pure oud. Begin with one softened with rose or vanilla, wear it for a few weeks, and only then move on to the raw varieties. Your nose gets used to these notes, but it takes time.

Frequently asked questions
Why are oud fragrances so expensive?
Because agarwood oil forms only in wood infected by a fungus, after years, and in minimal quantities. In its pure form, its price per gram exceeds that of gold: almost all fragrances on the market use a small percentage of it or a reconstruction.
Are oud and agarwood the same thing?
Yes: “oud” is the Arabic name, “agarwood” the English one, and both refer to the resin of the Aquilaria tree. In fragrance pyramids, they are used as synonyms.
Is oud a men's fragrance?
No. In the Middle East, men and women wear it without distinction, and it is almost always paired with rose, the most feminine note in perfumery. Versions with saffron and fruit are the ones women wear most often.
