Men's accessories · Beanies

It is the winter accessory men buy most often and choose most quickly. It is worth spending an extra minute on it, because between two beanies that look identical, the difference comes down to two things: how much they itch and how much they cover the ears.

The fibres, and which ones do not itch

Manuel Ritz and Emporio Armani work with a wool and cashmere blend, the ideal balance: it is as warm as wool and feels soft against the forehead. Emporio Armani also offers pure cashmere and ribbed virgin wool with the embroidered logo.

Dondup makes the technical wool and acrylic beanie: less warm than cashmere, but non-itchy by design and able to withstand washing without felting - the everyday model. Lacoste sticks to brushed wool, while adidas Originals and New Era focus on the sporty beanie.

The number that matters. Itchiness is not a question of quality but of fibre diameter: below 19 microns almost no one feels it, while above 23 most people do. Cashmere and merino are below that threshold, while coarse wool is above it. That is why an expensive beanie can itch while an acrylic one does not.

The scarf set

Peuterey offers the cashmere-blend scarf and beanie set with the logo, and it is among our best-selling items in December: it comes already coordinated, there is no size to get wrong and it completes the gift in one go. Individual scarves are in men's scarves.

Cuffed or plain

The cuff puts two layers over the forehead and ears: it is the style for real cold and for those who spend time outdoors. The plain style has a slimmer profile, sits better under a hood and does not add volume - if you often wear a hooded puffer jacket, it is the practical choice.

With a wool coat, a ribbed beanie is a natural choice; with a technical puffer jacket, a plain beanie works better. Visored and brimmed styles are in men's hats, while the women's version is in women's beanies.

Frequently asked questions

Which beanie is the warmest?

The ribbed one with a cuff, because the fabric is doubled over the forehead and ears. With the same shape, cashmere is warmer than wool at the same thickness, and wool is warmer than acrylic. A ribbed wool-cashmere blend with a cuff is the warmest combination among those we carry.

Why do some beanies itch while others do not?

Because of the fiber diameter, not the price: below 19 microns, almost no one notices any itching; above 23, most people do. Cashmere and merino are below that threshold, while coarse wool is above it. That is why an expensive beanie in rough wool can feel uncomfortable, while one in an acrylic blend may not.

Do men's beanies come in a specific size?

They are almost always one size: the stretch knit accommodates a head circumference of 55 to 60 centimeters. The few structured models available in specific sizes indicate this in the product details. That is why it works so well as a gift.

Is the scarf and beanie set worth it?

As a gift, yes, for three practical reasons: it already comes coordinated in color and material, there is no size to guess, and in December it takes care of the gift in a single purchase. As a purchase for yourself, it depends: if you already like the scarf you have, the beanie on its own gives you more freedom.

Is it worn under the hood?

Yes, and that is why the plain model is preferable to the ribbed one with a cuff: it adds less volume and the hood closes without pressing. If the beanie is the only headwear, however, the cuff covers the ears much better.
