Wood is the backbone of niche perfumery. It is no coincidence that it is the most represented family in our selection: cedar, sandalwood, vetiver and patchouli support the composition from the first half-hour through the evening, allowing perfumers to work on everything else without the fragrance falling apart.

What changes between cedar, sandalwood, vetiver and oud

Cedar is dry, pencil-like and almost pointed: it gives structure and verticality. Sandalwood does the opposite - it is milky, creamy and soft on the skin, the wood that makes a fragrance feel «comforting». Vetiver is a root, not strictly a wood: it brings wet earth, smoke and a bitter edge that enthusiasts love, but newcomers sometimes do not. Oud, finally, is resinous and animalic, the most expensive natural raw material in perfumery.

Knowing which of the four dominates a composition is the quickest way to understand whether a woody fragrance will suit you. Those who write to us saying «I'm looking for a woody fragrance» almost always have creamy sandalwood in mind, not earthy vetiver.

The woody fragrances we carry in the boutique

Pesade Orris Cocoon places iris and Longjing tea over a base of vetiver and woods: it is a refined, office-friendly woody fragrance, one of those nobody identifies but everyone notices. Nishane Hacivat does the opposite: pineapple and grapefruit on opening, followed by cedar, patchouli and oakmoss. A woody chypre that has been influential since 2017.

Nasomatto Absinth works with absinthe, green notes and vetiver, without a declared pyramid because the maison does not publish one. Nasomatto Black Afgano remains the most extreme woody fragrance we carry: cannabis, resins, tobacco, coffee and oud, created by Alessandro Gualtieri in 2009 and never truly imitated. The Spirit of Dubai Abraj takes the same family in a Gulf direction, with a chypre structure and a base of oud, oakmoss and amber.

Woody fragrances for men and women

In niche perfumery, the distinction matters little: almost all these fragrances are created as unisex and presented as such by the maisons. That said, we see a clear tendency in the boutique. Dry woods - vetiver, cedar and smoky notes such as Thana Tiryaq - are chosen more often by men. Woods with a floral heart, such as Nishane Thorns Become Roses (Turkish rose over a woody base) or Nishane Meant To Be Seen (violet and iris), more often end up on a woman's skin.

Our advice has remained the same for years: try it on skin and ignore the label. Vetiver on warm skin becomes something entirely different from the same vetiver on cool skin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a woody and an oriental fragrance?

A woody fragrance builds its base around cedar, sandalwood, vetiver or patchouli and remains dry. An oriental fragrance works with amber, resins, vanilla and spices, making it sweeter and more balsamic. Many fragrances fall somewhere in between: when the base is amber over woods, it is described as woody-amber.

Do woody fragrances last longer?

Generally, yes, because woody molecules are heavy and evaporate slowly. A niche woody extrait can easily last eight to twelve hours, compared with three or four for a citrus fragrance.

Is a woody fragrance suitable for summer too?

It depends on which one. Vetiver and cedar handle the heat beautifully and actually open better. Oud and creamy sandalwood can become heavy in August: it is better to save them for cool evenings.
