Niche perfumery · Vanilla
Vanilla is the world's best-selling perfumery ingredient, and also the most misunderstood. When someone asks us for «a vanilla fragrance», they almost always have one thing in mind - sweet, creamy, comforting - and discover in the boutique that there are at least four different versions.
Four vanillas, not one
Gourmand vanilla is the one everyone imagines: cream, sugar, pastry. Balsamic vanilla, on the other hand, works with benzoin and labdanum, and is more resinous than sweet. Smoky vanilla emerges from the meeting of tobacco, rum or burnt woods, and has very little sweetness. White vanilla, finally, is kept cool by musks and iris: powdery, almost like clean skin.
These are differences you cannot read on a label but can feel from the first spray. Those who come back saying «vanilla tires me» have almost always tried only the first of the four.
The vanillas we carry in the boutique
Jousset Accident à la Vanille is the most direct: vanilla, sandalwood and styrax, dense like a cream, created by Jimmy Bodin, founder and perfumer of Jousset. Filippo Sorcinelli Ascetic Vanilla takes it in the opposite direction - amberwood, sandalwood and musk keep it dry, while caramel stays in the background.
Filippo Sorcinelli Dolcissimo Sollievo is the balsamic vanilla: amber, tonka bean, patchouli and a base of incense and rosemary. Giardini di Toscana Bianco Latte, on the other hand, is pure milky softness, the one customers recognize without reading the bottle. For a cool, powdery version: Giardini di Toscana Celeste, where vanillin sits beneath marine notes and violet.
And if you are looking for vanilla that does not smell sweet, Nishane Fan Your Flames pairs it with coconut, rum and tobacco, while Nishane Tero combines it with caramel, Sichuan pepper and salt.
Vanilla fragrance for women and men
This is where the gender divide matters most, and there is an explanation: gourmand vanilla was marketed as feminine for twenty years. In niche perfumery, the story is different. Dry, smoky and spicy vanillas - Ascetic Vanilla, Fan Your Flames, Tero - are bought mainly by men, and they are also the ones that perform best in the office.
How to test it. A vanilla fragrance should be judged after two hours, never on a blotter. On warm skin, the sugar opens up and the fragrance changes completely: what seemed like a dessert in the perfumery can become, at home, a note of skin and tobacco.
If you prefer to start with the family rather than the ingredient: oriental · gourmand. The full selection is in the niche perfumery hub.
Other ingredients: rose · oud · white musk · jasmine · sandalwood · patchouli · tuberose · tobacco · lavender · cinnamon.
If the three lines of notes on the product page seem like a list rather than a sequence, we have explained how to read them: the fragrance pyramid, and how to use it to choose.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between vanilla and vanillin?
Vanilla is the extract of the pod, complex and with woody and smoky nuances. Vanillin is the single molecule that gives it its characteristic smell: more distinct, sweeter and more linear. Many fragrances use both.
Are vanilla fragrances suitable for summer?
Dense, gourmand vanillas become heavy in warm weather. In summer, white or milky vanillas work better, kept cool by musks and citrus, and one spray is enough.
How long does a vanilla fragrance last?
A long time: vanilla is a rich base note and remains on the skin for eight hours or more, and on clothes even the next day. It is among the most persistent ingredients in perfumery.
If you are looking for constructed, unsweetened vanilla, Jousset offers two interpretations: Accident a la Vanille and its Madeleine de Proust version.
