Cinnamon is the warmest spice in perfumery and also the most difficult to dose: one gram too much and the composition turns into Christmas sweetness, one gram too little and it disappears. When it is dosed well, you do not recognize it as cinnamon - you simply feel the fragrance warming.
Bark and leaf, two different materials
Bark oil is the pungent, sweet variety everyone knows, but it is also irritating to the skin and is used in minimal percentages in perfumery. Leaf oil is spicier and less sugary, with a facet reminiscent of clove: it is the one that appears most often in fragrance pyramids.
In almost all compositions, cinnamon does not work alone: it appears alongside cardamom, nutmeg and saffron, which extend its spicy facet without increasing its sweetness.
The cinnamons in our selection
The Spirit of Dubai Turath uses it in the most traditional way, with dried fruit, coffee and Damask rose over oud. The Spirit of Dubai Rimal combines it with saffron and nutmeg over a base of sandalwood and vetiver: the most desert-like interpretation of the group.
Thana Iftitan pairs it with apple and smoke in an explicitly autumnal composition. Thana Mutheer takes it towards Turkish rose and incense. Electimuss Vici Leather, on the other hand, uses it to ignite the leather, with wormwood and pink pepper - the most unusual use among those we carry.
When cinnamon really works
In cold weather, and in compositions where it is not the protagonist. Fragrances built entirely around cinnamon become tiring quickly; those where it is an accent - three notes out of twenty - remain interesting for hours. That is why you almost always find it in the heart of fragrance pyramids, never at the top.
A practical note. Cinnamon oils are among the most sensitizing for the skin, which is why they are used in highly diluted concentrations in perfumery. If you have reactive skin, spray it on your clothes.

Frequently asked questions
Are cinnamon fragrances suitable only for winter?
Almost. It is a warm, balsamic spice that becomes heavy in hot weather. In summer, it works only as a subtle accent within a fresh or citrus structure.
What is the difference between cinnamon and cassia?
Cassia is a Chinese cinnamon, more pungent and less delicate than Ceylon cinnamon. Olfactory pyramids often list only “cinnamon,” but the raw material used changes the result.
Can cinnamon irritate the skin?
Bark oil is sensitizing, which is why it is used in perfumery at very low, regulated percentages. If you have reactive skin, it is better to spray the fragrance on your clothes.
