The slingback is the answer to a very practical problem: a pump that slips off with every step. The heel remains exposed, while the foot is held by an adjustable strap at the back. The result is a shoe that stays in place without squeezing, and that you forget you are wearing sooner than a closed pump.
Why it fits better
With a closed pump, the fit depends entirely on how tight the back edge is: if it is loose, the shoe slips off; if it is tight, it rubs. The slingback shifts the job to the strap, which can be tightened as needed - and that millimetre of adjustment solves most fit problems.
This is also why it works so well for those with a narrow heel compared with the forefoot, a very common foot shape for which the classic pump is almost always a compromise.
For day or ceremony
In smooth leather or patent leather, with a low or medium heel, the slingback is an office shoe: closed at the front and open at the back, it works with trousers and skirts and stands up to eight hours of wear. In light-coloured nappa with rhinestones, it becomes a ceremony shoe, and this is the version we see chosen most often for weddings and christenings.

The boutique's advice. Adjust the strap while standing, not sitting down. When seated, the foot is shorter, so you end up fastening it too tightly; standing, you can find the point where the shoe stays in place without leaving marks. If the strap has no holes, a cobbler can add them in five minutes.
