These are not industry averages: they are the labels of the scarves we currently have.

Marella Orosei and Emporio Armani are both 100% wool — the latter in virgin wool, made in Italy. This is the benchmark: warm, durable and only prone to felting if treated badly. Pinko Sogliola contains 76% wool, 19% cashmere and 5% nylon: cashmere enhances the feel, while nylon helps retain the shape of a maxi scarf that would otherwise deform under its own weight.

Copenhagen works with the most interesting blends: the CPH Shawl 24 is 80% wool and 20% polyamide, while the 28 combines wool, mohair and alpaca in almost equal proportions — mohair provides the long pile and lightness, while alpaca provides warmth without weight.

Cashmere, wool, mohair: what really changes

Wool is the benchmark: it provides warmth in proportion to its weight, withstands moisture and lasts. Cashmere is as warm as wool at one third of the thickness, which is why it can be worn under a coat without adding bulk around the neck — but it is more delicate and frays where it rubs.

Mohair has a long pile that traps air: beautiful, very warm, and it sheds a little during the first few days. Alpaca is the fiber that provides the most warmth for its weight and almost never feels itchy, useful for anyone who cannot stand wool against their neck. Viscose — Twinset's Kefiah is 100% viscose — does not provide warmth: it drapes. It is a mid-season and style scarf.

The size almost nobody considers

A classic scarf is between 160 and 180 centimeters: wrap it once and let it fall. The maxi scarf reaches 200 centimeters and beyond, wraps twice, and becomes almost like a collar - it is the warmest and most demanding option because it adds volume over the coat.

How to care for a scarf so it lasts

Hand wash in cold water with mild soap, or use the wool cycle at 30 degrees inside a pillowcase. Never wring it: press it between two towels and dry it flat, because hanging it will stretch it permanently.

Pilling on wool and cashmere is not a defect; it is a natural result of friction where the fabric rubs - at the shoulder and collar. Remove it with a proper fabric shaver, not scissors. At the end of the season, store it clean: moths seek out invisible stains, not dust.
