Niche perfumery · Gourmand family
Gourmand is the youngest fragrance family: it was born in 1992 with Angel and in thirty years has become the best-selling one. In niche perfumery, it has taken a different direction from that of the major brands - less sugar, more substance: real coffee, bitter cocoa, pistachio, milk.
Not all sweet fragrances are the same
Vanilla gourmand is the most direct: vanilla, tonka, benzoin, and the sensation of warm skin. Roasted gourmand works with coffee, cocoa and hazelnut, and is more bitter than sweet. Milky gourmand, made of milk, caramel and coconut, is the style that has taken off in recent years and that younger customers ask for by name.
The difference between a successful gourmand and an cloying one lies in the contrast: you need something bitter, salty or woody to support the sweet element. Without it, after an hour it becomes a piece of candy.
The gourmand fragrances in our selection
Jousset Accident à la Vanille is the densest vanilla we carry: cream and sugar held together by sandalwood and styrax. Giardini di Toscana Bianco Latte is the quintessential milky gourmand, the one customers recognise from the first spray. Jousset Ciao Bello Pistachio works with pistachio cream, marzipan and brioche: literally a pastry shop.
For those who want sweetness without the candy: Nishane Tero combines caramel, Sichuan pepper and salt, creating the contrast perfectly. Orto Parisi Boccanera combines cocoa, chilli and leather in an almost wicked gourmand. Nishane Fan Your Flames remains the house classic: coconut, rum and tobacco over oakmoss. And Thana Dhuaf takes hazelnut and coffee in a Middle Eastern direction, with incense and cardamom.
Gourmand fragrances for women and men
This is the family with the strongest female demand, but we sell roasted and spicy gourmands (Boccanera, Dhuaf, Tero) mainly to men. The distinction is not gender: it is how much sugar you can tolerate.
How to test it. A gourmand should be judged after two hours, never on a blotter. On warm skin, the sugar opens up and the fragrance changes completely: what seemed like a dessert in the perfume shop can become, at home, a note of skin and tobacco.
The full selection is in the niche perfumery hub. The other fragrance families: Woody · Oriental · Floral · Aromatic · Spicy · Citrus · Leather.
If you are looking for a specific ingredient instead: vanilla · rose · oud · white musk · jasmine · sandalwood · patchouli · tuberose · tobacco · lavender · cinnamon.
If the three lines of notes on the product page seem like a list rather than a sequence, we have explained how to read them: the fragrance pyramid, and how to use it when choosing.
Frequently asked questions
Which gourmand fragrance is best suited to winter?
Vanilla and roasted fragrances: vanilla, coffee, cocoa and tonka perform better in cold weather. In summer, a dense gourmand can become heavy; milky or citrus versions are better.
Are gourmand fragrances too sweet?
It depends on the composition. Successful niche gourmands always have a contrast - salt, spices, woods, leather - that dries out the sugar. A purely sweet gourmand becomes tiring after half an hour.
Can you wear a gourmand fragrance to the office?
With moderation. One spray, preferably on a covered area: vanilla projects more than you might think and becomes overpowering in an enclosed space.
Four of the five Jousset fragrances are gourmand: the house works almost exclusively in this style, from vanilla and pistachio to bakhoor.
