Oriental is the label the French gave, a century ago, to anything that smelled of amber, resins and spices. Today many maisons prefer to call it ambery, but the substance remains the same: these are the warmest, densest and longest-lasting fragrances in perfumery.

What makes a fragrance oriental

The base. Amber is not a single raw material but an accord - labdanum, benzoin, vanilla, sometimes styrax - which becomes sweet, balsamic and slightly animalic on the skin. Everything else is built around it: spices (cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, saffron), resins such as incense and myrrh, and in Middle Eastern versions, oud.

This is the family where concentration matters most. An oriental in eau de toilette is almost always disappointing: you need an extrait, or at least a rich eau de parfum, because these molecules need substance to work.

The orientals in our selection

The Spirit of Dubai Turath and Majalis are the reference point for the genre in its Emirati interpretation: dried fruit, Damask rose, coffee, cardamom and a base of oud, leather and honey. Filippo Sorcinelli LAVS explores the same register from an Italian and sacred perspective - black pepper, cardamom, elemi, labdanum, oakmoss: it was created as a tribute to its creator's liturgical vestment atelier.

Ortigia Ambra Nera is the most approachable amber we carry, ideal if you're just discovering the family. Orto Parisi Boccanera is at the opposite extreme: chilli pepper, cocoa, leather and vanilla, an oriental-gourmand fragrance that leaves no one indifferent. For winter evenings, Nishane Nanshe by Cécile Zarokian brings together cardamom, rose and iris with a delicacy that orientals rarely possess.

Orientals for men and women

Historically, oriental was the most feminine fragrance family of the twentieth century, then the Middle East brought it back into the masculine sphere. In contemporary niche perfumery, that line has disappeared completely: Nishane Nefs, with fig, mint and saffron, is worn equally by men and women, and the same is true of Turath.

If you're looking for a classic feminine oriental, consider Almafolia by Giardini di Toscana - tuberose, coconut and vanilla. If you want something drier and more masculine, Pesade De Nude, with ylang ylang, leather and patchouli, delivers exactly that.

Be mindful of the dosage. Orientals project much more than they seem to in the first few minutes. One spray, two at most, and never on your neck if you're going into a small office: we repeat this every day in the boutique.

Frequently asked questions

Are oriental fragrance and Arabic fragrance the same thing?

No. “Oriental” is a fragrance family and includes fragrances made everywhere, including France and Italy. “Arabic fragrance” indicates origin: Gulf maisons almost always work within the oriental family, but not all orientals are Arabic.

How long does an oriental fragrance last?

A niche oriental extrait generally lasts eight to twelve hours on the skin, and can still be smelled on clothing the next day. It is the most long-lasting family of all.

What is the right season for an oriental?

Autumn and winter. The cold keeps projection in check and allows resins and spices to emerge; in summer, the same notes become overpowering.
