Lavender has a reputation problem: for too many years, it was the scent of wardrobe sachets and bath soaps. In niche perfumery, it is something else entirely - herbaceous, camphoraceous, sometimes almost animalic - and worth trying again without prejudice.

Why fougère starts here

In 1882, Fougère Royale brought together lavender, coumarin and oakmoss and single-handedly invented modern men's perfumery: almost everything a man wore in the twentieth century descends from that formula. Lavender appears in it as a fresh, clean top note with an aromatic character.

Contemporary perfumery uses it in two opposite ways: cool, built around citrus and herbs, as in the classics; or warm, pushed towards gourmand territory with vanilla and tonka, the interpretation that has brought the ingredient back into focus in recent years.

Filippo Sorcinelli But Not Today is the most scholarly interpretation: artemisia, lavender, calamus and rosemary over a base of oakmoss and sandalwood. Ennui Noir, by the same perfumer, takes it instead towards heliotrope and vanilla, becoming almost powdery.

Orto Parisi Brutus combines it with geranium and rose over patchouli and labdanum, in an aromatic composition with little freshness. Nishane B-612 keeps it balsamic with coriander, while Nishane Papilefiko pairs it with cardamom and artemisia. And in The Spirit of Dubai Abraj, lavender appears within a chypre and Middle Eastern structure, making it the least predictable interpretation of the group.

Who should try lavender again

For those who dismissed it because it “smells clean.” It is the reaction we hear most often at the counter, and it almost always changes after a second try: niche lavender fragrances have a contrast - smoke, leather, vanilla, spices - that takes them far beyond soap. They also have a practical advantage: they are among the easiest fragrances to wear during the day and to the office.

Why is lavender associated with soap?

Because for decades it was an ingredient in soaps, detergents, and household products. In niche perfumery, it is used differently - with smoke, leather, or vanilla - and the result has very little in common.

Is lavender a masculine note?

Historically, yes, because fougère made it the centre of men's perfumery. However, the gourmand and powdery versions of recent years have brought it back to completely unisex use.

Is a lavender fragrance suitable for the office?

It is among the most suitable: it is fresh, does not invade other people's space, and does not become tiring. The drawback is its longevity, generally four or five hours, so it is worth keeping the bottle close at hand.
