Niche perfumery · Sandalwood

Sandalwood is the wood that makes a fragrance comforting. It is neither as dry as cedar nor as earthy as vetiver: it is milky, creamy, almost edible, and in compositions it cushions everything else.

Mysore, Australia, and the molecule that changed everything

Mysore sandalwood, from India, is the historical reference: since the 1990s, harvesting has been strictly regulated and authentic oil is almost impossible to find. Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) is the most widespread substitute, somewhat drier and less creamy. Then there is javanol, a synthetic molecule with a more powerful and tenacious sandalwood smell than the wood itself: you will find it listed in several contemporary pyramids, and its appearance on a label is a sign of honesty.

The sandalwoods in our selection

Jousset Accident à la Vanille uses it as a structure beneath the vanilla, which is the classic way to use it. Nasomatto Silver Musk pairs it with white musk to create a skin-like effect. Filippo Sorcinelli Ascetic Vanilla keeps it dry with amberwood.

For sandalwood in the starring role: Giardini di Toscana Christos, where incense, labdanum and sandalwood create something almost liturgical, and Filippo Sorcinelli Luce dei Cuori, which warms it with amber and tonka bean. Nishane Kredo instead takes it towards suede and oud.

Why sandalwood appeals to almost everyone

Because it has no sharp edges. It is the wood we recommend to anyone who says “woody fragrances seem too masculine to me”: vetiver and cedar can feel austere, but sandalwood never does. It also has a practical quality that should not be underestimated - it stays close to the skin, so it can be worn at the office without invading anyone else’s space.

A useful technical note. If you see “javanol” instead of “sandalwood” in a pyramid, it is not a compromise: it is often the better choice, because high-quality natural oil is rare and the molecule lasts longer without turning.

If you prefer to start with the family rather than the ingredient: woody · oriental. The full selection is in the niche perfumery hub.

Other ingredients: vanilla · rose · oud · white musk · jasmine · patchouli · tuberose · tobacco · lavender · cinnamon.

If the three lines of notes on the product page seem like a list rather than a sequence, we have explained how to read the fragrance pyramid, and how to use it to choose.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Mysore sandalwood and Australian sandalwood?

Indian Mysore is creamier and milkier, but harvesting has been regulated for decades and authentic oil is extremely rare. Australian sandalwood is the most common substitute: the same direction, but slightly drier and less rounded.

Is sandalwood a masculine wood?

No - in fact, it is the most unisex of woods. Its creaminess makes it the easiest wood to wear for anyone who finds vetiver and cedar too austere.

How long does a sandalwood fragrance last?

It is a substantial base note: eight hours on the skin is normal, and it lasts even longer on fabrics. Versions with javanol tend to last even longer than the natural oil.
