Niche perfumery · Olfactory family
Aromatic means herbs: lavender, sage, rosemary, thyme, artemisia, wormwood. It is the oldest family in men's perfumery (fougère originated precisely here, in 1882) and remains the one that gives an impression of cleanliness without smelling of soap.
Aromatic, fougère, green: how to find your way
Classic fougère is lavender, coumarin and oakmoss: the structure of almost every men's fragrance of the 20th century. Green aromatic fragrances instead focus on galbanum, crushed leaves and chlorophyll notes, and are sharper. Mediterranean aromatic fragrances, which we are seeing return with greater force, work with immortelle, myrtle, sage and citrus, and evoke a landscape more than a fragrance.
The aromatic fragrances we stock
Filippo Sorcinelli But Not Today is the most refined interpretation of the family: artemisia, lavender, calamus, rosemary, styrax and a base of oakmoss and sandalwood. Nasomatto Absinth reduces everything to its essence (wormwood, green notes, vetiver), with the essential quality that is the maison's signature.
Nishane Wūlóng Chá takes the aromatic profile in the direction of tea, with litsea cubeba and oolong over bergamot and mandarin: our recommendation for warm days. Nishane B-612 is a balsamic fougère with coriander, while Orto Parisi Brutus brings lavender, geranium and rose together over patchouli and labdanum: an aromatic fragrance with little freshness, to be tested before buying.
When an aromatic fragrance works
It is the easiest family to wear during the day, at the office and in warm weather. It does not demand attention or invade other people's space, which is a rare quality in niche perfumery. The limitation is longevity: aromatic molecules are light and volatile, and five or six hours is a good result.
Our advice. An aromatic fragrance is the right one to keep at the office or in your suitcase for a midday refresh. It is not the fragrance to wear to an important dinner.
The full selection is in the niche perfumery hub. The other olfactory families: Woody · Oriental · Floral · Gourmand · Spicy · Citrus · Leather.
If you are looking for a specific ingredient: vanilla · rose · oud · white musk · jasmine · sandalwood · patchouli · tuberose · tobacco · lavender · cinnamon.
If the three lines of notes on the product page seem like a list rather than a sequence, we have written about how to read them: the fragrance pyramid, and how to use it to choose.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an aromatic fragrance and a fresh fragrance?
“Fresh” is not an olfactory family but a sensation: citrus and aquatic fragrances can create it too. An aromatic fragrance is fresh because of the herbs, and remains drier and greener than a citrus fragrance.
Are aromatic fragrances only for men?
No, but they remain the family most associated with men's fragrances because of the fougère tradition. Versions with tea, citrus or iris - such as Wūlóng Chá or Orris Cocoon - are worn without distinction.
How long does an aromatic fragrance last?
Generally, four to six hours. If you are looking for greater longevity, choose a woody aromatic: a vetiver or cedar base noticeably extends its duration.
