Leather Goods · Card Holders
The card holder has replaced the wallet for a very practical reason: cash has almost disappeared from our pockets. If you pay by phone and carry three cards and your driving licence, a twelve-compartment wallet is bulk you carry around empty. Hence the small, flat item that fits in the inside jacket pocket without deforming it.
How many cards really fit
It is the question everyone asks us, and the honest answer is that the stated number and the comfortable number almost never match. A card holder with four pockets holds four cards while remaining flat; with six, it starts to bulge; beyond eight, it is a wallet in disguise, so you may as well choose a wallet.
Our rule at the counter is to count the cards you actually use in a week. Almost always, there are three - debit card, credit card, driving licence or health card - and you choose the format based on that number. If you have eight, you usually have five that could stay at home.
Leather or aluminium
Leather gives way: after a few weeks, the pockets settle around the thickness of your cards and the item becomes yours. It develops a patina, gets scratched, and the scratches become part of its appearance. It is the choice for those who want their accessory to age alongside them.
Aluminium does the opposite: it does not give by a millimetre, keeps cards perfectly flat and protects them from bending - useful if you sit with the card holder in your back pocket. On the other hand, it does not age as well as leather: it gets marked, and the marks remain marks. Several Piquadro models feature two aluminium plates with a leather insert and an elastic band, offering a compromise between the two schools of thought.
Is RFID shielding really useful?
It is worth saying this honestly, because you can read all sorts of claims about it. Proximity data theft from contactless cards is technically possible but very rare: you need to be within a few centimetres, and contactless payments are still subject to limits and authorisation. Shielding matters more for electronic documents - electronic identity cards, passports and company ID badges.
That said, on the models that feature it, RFID adds nothing in terms of thickness or price, so there is no reason to avoid it. It simply is not the reason to choose one card holder over another.
The boutique’s recommendation. If it is your first one, choose a leather model with four pockets. It is the format that is least likely to go wrong: it stays flat, adapts within two weeks and, if you later discover that you want something more spacious, you will still have an item you can use in your jacket pocket. Aluminium is best for those who keep it in the back pocket of their jeans.
The brands we carry
Piquadro is the Bologna-based house of functional leather goods and the brand we represent most extensively: leather, aluminium, automatic opening and the MagSafe ring for the iPhone. Pinko works with cowhide and python-embossed leather on women’s models, with the Airone plaque and Love Birds buckle. Emporio Armani brings bovine leather and embossed suede, Off-White the two Jitney Quote and Bookish models, and MC2 Saint Barth grain leather with a logo.
We also carry our own line of leather card holders, priced between 22 and 30 euros, for those looking for a functional item without a name on it: pouch style, a model with a banknote compartment, and a version with RFID shielding.
As a gift
It is one of the few accessories you can give as a gift without knowing someone’s size, and the price range — from 22 to 122 euros — covers both a small token and a substantial gift. From mid-November onward, it is among the items we are asked to wrap most often, along with belts and wallets.
If you are looking for something more spacious, the natural choice is men’s wallets and women’s wallets. The rest of the work leather goods are from Piquadro.
Frequently asked questions
How many cards fit in a card holder?
It depends on the model, but the practical rule is that the comfortable capacity is lower than the stated one: a four-pocket card holder can hold four cards while remaining flat, while with six it starts to bulge. We recommend counting the cards you actually use in a week — it is almost always three — and choosing accordingly.
Is a card holder or a wallet better?
A card holder is a good choice if you almost always pay by card or phone and do not carry cash: it fits into the inside pocket of a jacket without distorting it. A wallet remains the right choice if you need banknotes, coins, and more than six or seven cards. Some models with a banknote compartment offer a middle ground.
Is RFID shielding really useful?
It helps, but less than people say. Proximity data theft from contactless cards is theoretically possible and rare in practice, because it requires a distance of just a few centimetres. It is more useful for electronic documents, such as an electronic identity card or passport. On models that include it, it adds neither thickness nor cost, so you might as well have it.
Does a MagSafe card holder attach securely to the iPhone?
Yes, on models from iPhone 12 onward, which have the integrated magnetic ring. The connection is secure for normal use — you can pull the phone out of your pocket while the card holder stays attached — but it is magnetic, not mechanical: it will detach if knocked or dropped. It also works with MagSafe-compatible cases.
Do MagSafe magnets damage credit cards?
Today's contactless cards work with a chip and an antenna, not magnetism, and are not affected by the MagSafe field. The same does not apply to the old magnetic stripe, which is now largely obsolete: if you still have a card that can only be read by swiping it — some hotel keys or badges, for example — it is best kept elsewhere.
Does a leather card holder stretch with use?
Yes, and that is its strength. During the first two weeks, the pockets adjust to the thickness of the cards you keep in them, and the item stops feeling rigid. That is why a leather card holder should be chosen snugly: if the cards fit comfortably at first, they will be loose after a month.
