The tassel loafer is the only style in which a decorative detail determines the shoe’s entire character. The tassels are visible rather than disappearing beneath the trouser hem, which is why a tassel loafer is never a neutral choice. Here you’ll find our selection, ranging from the elegant reinterpretation of a combat boot to tailored footwear.

The same tassel on two opposite shoes

In the boutique, the surprise is always the same when these styles are placed side by side: beneath the same detail, two completely different worlds coexist.

On one side is the Dr. Martens Adrian, born from the world of workwear: Goodyear construction — upper and sole joined by stitching rather than simply glued together — polished Smooth leather and an AirWair sole. It is a loafer with weight, one you feel on the foot and that is built to last. The Adrian Ben version raises the level with double tassels, kiltie fringe and waxed pull-up Orleans leather.

On the other, Italian tailored loafers — Barrett, Doucal's, Corvari, Graziano Salvatelli — with leather soles, leather linings and a slim profile that almost disappears beneath the trouser hem.

There is no better option: there is the right one for you. If the shoe needs to withstand the city every day, Goodyear construction is a guarantee. If it needs to be worn with a suit, the slim profile wins.

When to wear them, and with what

The tassel loafer was born as a formal shoe and became, in the 1980s, the footwear of city professionals. Today it sits somewhere in between: more distinctive than a lace-up and less relaxed than a sneaker.

With tailored trousers, it works when the length is right — the hem should lightly touch the shoe and leave the tassels visible; otherwise the detail is lost, and you might as well choose a penny loafer. It works very well with denim too, provided the jeans are straight rather than tapered.

Socks are the question everyone asks us: with a tailored loafer, you can go barefoot in summer with no-show socks, but not with the Adrian — its construction is robust and calls for a proper sock.

Sizing

This selection runs from 35 to 45, with half sizes on the Italian styles. Loafers have no laces: they need to hold the foot immediately. If your heel slips out on the second step, the size is wrong, and an insole will not solve it.

Please note that Dr. Martens produces in full UK sizes: if you usually wear a half size, you will generally go down to the nearest full size. For conversions, use the size converter.

Care and wear

The tassels are the first part to show wear because they rub against the trousers with every step. Do not pull or curl them: if they loosen, tighten the knot at the base, not the tassel itself.

On polished leather, a soft cloth and neutral cream from time to time are enough. On patent leather, as with Corvari, use only a damp cloth: creams dull the finish. And for every pair, follow the rule that saves more shoes than anything else — do not wear them two days in a row, and use shoe trees while they rest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a tassel loafer and a penny loafer?

It is the vamp, the section over the instep. A tassel loafer has two dangling tassels; a penny loafer has a leather strap with a central slit. The former is a distinctive detail that stands out, while the latter is more understated and unobtrusive beneath the trouser hem. They are separated intentionally: tassels here, and the other style on the penny loafer page.

Can you wear tassel loafers with a suit?

Yes, and that is precisely what they were created for. The rule is that the suit should be for daytime rather than formal evening wear: with a tuxedo or a dark evening suit, choose a plain lace-up. With a grey or navy suit, a tassel loafer works beautifully, especially in smooth, dark leather.

What does Goodyear construction mean?

It is a system in which the upper and sole are joined with stitching rather than just glue. It costs more and makes the shoe stiffer at first, but it allows it to last much longer and, in theory, to be resoled. In our selection, it is used on the Dr. Martens Adrian.

Do tassels wear out?

They loosen rather than wear out, mainly because they rub against the trousers. If this happens, gently tighten the knot at the base. Never pull them: the leather will stretch and will not return to its original shape.

Are there styles for women?

Yes. Alongside the men's styles, we carry the Coccinelle Beat with its leather tassel and plectrum detail, and the selection starts at size 35. The tassel loafer is not gender-specific: only the proportions change.
