A jacket either fits well or it doesn't for one reason: the shoulder. Not the size, not the colour, not the fabric: the shoulder seam must fall where yours ends, and if it falls two centimetres further out, no tailor can fix it without remaking the sleeve. It's the first thing to look at in a photo, and the only detail worth checking when you return it.

The blazer as the central piece

The blazer is the most represented style in our selection, and the one that works across the widest range of occasions: over a shirt it becomes office-ready, over a T-shirt it becomes casual, and over an evening dress it makes it wearable. It is also the piece clients most often buy again in a better version, because what you wear every day eventually wears out.

Single-breasted is the versatile choice: you can wear it open, it does not impose a particular line, and it suits different body shapes. Double-breasted should be kept closed — that is its raison d'être — and creates a sharper, more formal silhouette. It elongates taller figures and can weigh down shorter ones: it is the style that needs to be tried on.

Length changes proportions

The classic blazer, which reaches mid-hip, is the one that never goes wrong. The cropped style stops at the waist and raises the waistline: it works beautifully with high-waisted trousers, much less so with low-waisted ones, where it cuts the figure at the worst point.

Oversized does not mean a large jacket; it means a jacket designed to be wide: the shoulder is deliberately dropped and the body falls straight. Taking a size larger in a regular style does not create the same result — it only gives you a jacket that does not fit. If you want volume, choose a style designed that way.

The boutique's advice. If you are buying just one, choose a single-breasted wool blazer in navy or grey, with a classic length. It is the only outer layer that works over jeans on Saturday and tailored trousers on Monday, and the only one that never goes out of style. Strong colour and distinctive shapes come later, once the foundation is in place.

Cold-season fabrics

Wool is the quintessential autumn choice and the fabric most represented by us in this category: it drapes well, holds its shape, and in medium weights can be worn from September to March. Houndstooth and checks are the patterns that return every year without becoming tiring.

The peacoat deserves a mention: it originated as a sailor's jacket, double-breasted, in heavy wool, with a wide lapel that can be fastened up to the neck. It is shorter than a coat and warmer than a blazer, making it the right outer layer for the months when a coat is too much and a jacket is not enough.

Linen and lightweight fabrics are reserved for transitional seasons and summer; leather and quilted styles complete the assortment in smaller sizes.

How to try it on when buying online

Three checks, in this order. The shoulder, as we said: the seam must fall on the bone, not beyond it. The sleeve must stop at the wrist and reveal one centimetre of shirt if you are wearing one. The button: when you fasten the first one, the fabric must not pull into an X across the chest — if it does, the size is wrong even if the shoulders fit well.

Sleeves can easily be shortened, the body length can be adjusted, but the shoulder cannot. That is why this check comes first.

The houses we carry

Marella is the most represented and forms the tailored side of the selection: wool-blend blazers, double-breasted styles, classic patterns. MM Max Mara follows the same line with a more minimalist cut.

Pinko brings a contemporary feel — cropped styles, oversized fits, vintage finishes — while Twinset adds softer femininity. Emporio Armani, Dondup and Peuterey complete the selection. Prices start at forty euros and reach seven hundred and fifty, with most styles around two hundred.

For true cold weather, there are coats and down jackets; under the jacket, knitwear and shirts. For ceremonies, occasion dresses.

Frequently asked questions

How can you tell if a jacket is the right size?

Start with the shoulder: the seam must fall exactly where yours ends, not beyond it. Then check the sleeve, which should stop at the wrist, and the button — when you fasten the first one, the fabric must not pull into an X across the chest. Sleeves and length can be adjusted by a tailor, but the shoulder cannot: that is why it should be checked first.

What is the difference between a single-breasted and a double-breasted blazer?

A single-breasted blazer has one row of buttons and can be worn open: it is the versatile shape that suits different body types. A double-breasted blazer has two rows, should be kept closed, and creates a sharper, more formal line. It elongates taller figures, while tending to weigh down smaller or fuller body shapes.

What is the difference between an oversized jacket and going up a size?

An oversized jacket is designed to be wide from the outset: the shoulder is deliberately dropped, the sleeves are proportioned to that volume, and the body falls straight. Going up a size in a regular style only gives you a jacket that does not fit well, with the shoulder seam in the wrong place.

What is a peacoat?

A double-breasted jacket in heavy wool, originally a sailor's garment, with a wide lapel that can be fastened up to the neck. It is shorter than a coat and warmer than a blazer: it is the outer layer for the months when a coat is too much and a jacket is not enough.

What should you wear with a cropped blazer?

Wear it with high-waisted trousers or a high-waisted skirt, because the cropped style raises the waistline and lengthens the leg. With low-waisted trousers, however, it cuts the figure at the worst point, leaving the midsection exposed. It is the boldest and least versatile blazer shape.

Where to look next

If you haven't found what you were looking for here, the shortest route is Marella Women, Pinko, Twinset Women and Emporio Armani Women: they are the same rails organised by another criterion, and the right style is often there under a different label.
