The MagSafe card holder solves a small, everyday problem: going out without a wallet. It attaches magnetically to the back of the iPhone and stays there - in your pocket, in your hand, or in your bag - so the only thing you need to remember is your phone.

How the attachment works

From the iPhone 12 onwards, Apple integrated a ring of magnets into the rear housing: the MagSafe standard. Compatible accessories have the same ring and align themselves in the correct position: bring them close and they snap into place. The same applies to MagSafe-certified cases, which let the magnetic field pass through.

The hold is secure during normal use: pull your phone out of your jeans pocket and the card holder stays attached. It should be said clearly, however, that this is a magnetic, not mechanical, attachment - in the event of an impact or fall, it separates, and that is intentional behaviour, not a defect. If you carry your phone in a tight pocket with your keys, it is worth knowing this.

Do cards become demagnetised?

No, not today's cards. Contactless debit and credit cards work with a chip and a radio antenna, and magnetism does not affect them. The risk concerned the old magnetic stripe, which is now largely obsolete: if you still have a card that can only be read by swiping it - certain hotel keys, some company badges - it is best to keep it somewhere else.

Several of the models we stock also feature RFID shielding, which works in the opposite direction: it does not protect against magnets, but against remote scanning.

Leather or aluminium

The leather models are the slimmest and the right choice if you carry your phone in a pocket: a few extra millimetres are noticeable, and leather adds the least. Those in aluminium, often with an elastic band, keep the cards perfectly flat and withstand more, but they are more noticeable between your fingers and in your pocket.

Frequently asked questions

Which iPhones does the MagSafe card holder work with?

With all iPhones from model 12 onward, which have a ring of magnets integrated into the body, and with MagSafe-certified cases fitted to these models. Earlier iPhones and Android smartphones do not have a magnet to attach to.

Does MagSafe demagnetize credit cards?

No. Modern contactless cards use a chip and a radio antenna, not a magnetic stripe, and the MagSafe field does not affect them. The issue only concerns older magnetic-stripe cards, such as some hotel room keys or company badges.

Does the MagSafe card holder come off easily?

For everyday use, it holds well: it stays attached when you take the phone out of your pocket or bag. However, it uses magnetic rather than mechanical attachment, so it will separate from the phone in the event of an impact or fall.

Does it also work with a case on the phone?

Yes, if the case is MagSafe-certified: these cases are designed to let the magnetic field pass through and maintain alignment. With a generic case, especially a thick one, the hold is significantly reduced or disappears altogether.

How many cards fit in a MagSafe card holder?

Usually three, which is also the number we recommend. These are designed to stay slim and not protrude beyond the phone's profile: filling them beyond that makes them unstable when you place the iPhone on a table.
