Autumn-winter 2026-2027 bags: the shapes that matter (and those that fade)

Borse autunno-inverno 2026-2027: le forme che contano (e quelle che passano)

Trends · Fall-winter 2026-2027

The fall-winter runways said one thing, and for once with considerable consistency: after years of rigid micro-bags, we are returning to softness. Bags that slouch, that are carried unfastened, that already look lived-in the day you buy them. In the boutique, we have been seeing it in purchases for several months, not just in magazines.

Here you will find the shapes that we think will last, those that will pass, and one thing that matters more than shape: the material.

1. Suede is the real news of the season

More than any silhouette. Suede is returning everywhere - shoes, outerwear, bags - and in leather goods it has a practical advantage: it absorbs light instead of reflecting it, so a suede bag always looks more expensive than it is. It is the material we have focused on most this season.

We know the objection: it gets dirty. That is only partly true. Suede treated with protective spray before first use will last an entire season without any problems; what really damages it is not rain but rubbing against dark denim, which transfers its dye. If you carry it crossbody with a new pair of jeans, wear the bag at the front rather than at your side.

2. The hobo bag, the bag that slouches

It is the shape that best represents the idea of this season: a soft crescent, with no internal structure, resting under the arm and taking the shape of the person carrying it. It looks good on one shoulder and not in the hand - it was made to be carried nonchalantly, not shown off.

A practical tip: the hobo bag works when the rest of the outfit has a clean line. With an oversized coat and relaxed trousers, it becomes messy. With straight-leg trousers and a fitted sweater, it is perfect.

3. The bucket bag, the comeback we did not expect

Absent for five years, back in the wake of the 2000s revival. The bucket bag has a structural flaw no one talks about: everything gets lost inside because it is deep and has no compartments. But it has one advantage that makes up for it: it stands upright on its own, so when placed on the floor or a chair it does not collapse like a hobo bag.

If you choose it, choose one with a functional drawstring, not merely a decorative one: it's what determines whether the bag really closes.

4. Small shoulder bag: the shape that never goes out of style

It's the category we sell most all year round, and it's not a trend: it's a habit. The new feature for autumn is the proportion, which is widening horizontally - the so-called East-West shape, wider than it is tall, which sits better on the hip and holds a phone sideways rather than upright.

There's one rule we always give for shoulder bags: look at the strap before the bag. If it's thin and non-adjustable, you'll feel it after an hour. If it's at least two centimetres wide or padded, you can carry the bag all day.

5. Shopper: from work bag to simply a bag

The shopper has stopped being a container for a laptop and has become a fully fledged bag, often made of soft leather and without a rigid structure. The advantage is obvious; the drawback is that without structure, a full shopper takes the shape of its contents, and it's not always a beautiful shape.

If you use it for work, choose one with a rigid base. For everything else, choose one without.

6. Colors: brown has taken the place of black

It's the most visible change this season, and it concerns fashion as a whole, not just bags: brown in every shade - leather, cognac, dark brown, mocha - has become the go-to neutral. Burgundy and a dark red with cherry undertones also work well alongside it.

A candid note on black: it hasn't disappeared and it won't. If you need to buy just one bag that will last five years, black remains the most practical choice. Brown is the more interesting choice, which is a different thing.

If you want to explore the season's palette in more depth, we've covered it extensively in our guide to autumn-winter 2026-2027 colors.

What we think will fade

Embossed crocodile and animal prints come back cyclically and become tiresome just as regularly: they're fun purchases, not purchases that last. The same goes for faux-fur details applied to bags, which look dated after two seasons and are difficult to clean. If you have just one budget, put it toward a neutral shape in a warm color.

The boutique's advice. A bag is typically kept for around four years: it's worth choosing based on how often you'll use it, not how new the shape looks. The right question isn't “is it on trend?”, but “does it fit my phone, wallet and keys, and can I carry it for eight hours?” If the answer is yes, everything else comes later.

Where to look in our selection

Gianni Chiarini is the brand we know best: Italian leather, soft shapes, the signature of the season. Dragon Diffusion works with hand-woven leather and is the alternative if you're looking for something unlike anything you've seen before.

Coccinelle and Pinko cover the most recognizable styles, while Orciani represents a more understated, tailored approach. Everything else is in the women's bags collection.

Frequently asked questions

Which bags are on trend for autumn-winter 2026-2027?

Soft shapes: crescent hobo, bucket bag, East-West shoulder bag that is wider than it is tall, and unstructured shopper. Suede is the season's leading material; when it comes to colours, brown in all its shades has taken the place of black as the go-to neutral.

What colour bag should you buy this autumn?

Brown - leather, cognac, dark brown - is the colour of the season, with burgundy and cherry red as alternatives. If, however, you need to buy just one bag that will last for years, black remains the most rational choice: it hasn't disappeared and it won't.

Do suede bags get damaged?

Less than you might think, if you treat them with a protective spray before first use. The real enemy isn't rain but rubbing against dark denim, which transfers colour: if you carry a shoulder bag with new jeans, keep it in front of you rather than at your side.

Is a shoulder bag or a shopper better?

It depends on how many hours you carry it. For the whole day, choose a shoulder bag, provided the strap is at least two centimetres wide or padded: thin straps become uncomfortable after an hour. A shopper is more practical if you often set it down, and choose a structured base if you carry a laptop.

How long does a leather bag last?

With normal use and minimal care, a well-made leather bag can easily last four or five years, while vegetable-tanned leathers improve over time. The first part to give way is not the body of the bag but the strap at the attachment point: that's where it's worth checking the quality before buying.
