Beauty · Fragrances for him

Let's say it upfront, because it's the most useful thing we can tell you: in niche perfumery, there are no men's fragrances. The houses we carry create without assigning a gender, and the same bottle changes depending on the skin that wears it. This page isn't a separate department: it's a starting point for anyone looking for one.

Where to start, if you don't know where to start

Three families cover almost everything that men reach for at our counter. Woody fragrances are the backbone of niche perfumery and our deepest category, with around sixty fragrances: dry cedar, creamy sandalwood, earthy vetiver, resinous oud. These compositions last from morning to evening without becoming tiring.

Aromatic fragrances feature lavender, sage and rosemary: they're the cleanest and easiest to wear at the office. Leather fragrances are at the opposite extreme: tanned leather, smoke, a character that doesn't go unnoticed. Choose this family when you want your fragrance to be a signature, not an accessory.

The boutique's advice. If this is your first niche fragrance, try a woody scent with sandalwood: it's the material that makes a fragrance feel comforting and appeals to almost everyone. Earthy, bitter vetiver is more intriguing but divisive - enthusiasts love it, while newcomers sometimes don't. Leave L'oud for your second or third fragrance.

Rose is not a feminine note

It's the most common misconception, and in niche perfumery it means missing out on many opportunities. In Middle Eastern perfumery, rose is very much a masculine note, often layered with oud and resins, and the result is nothing like a rose garden: it's dark, rich, almost balsamic. A significant number of our woody fragrances feature rose, and they're among the scents male customers are happiest to buy once they've tried them.

The same goes for vanilla, which in men's gourmand fragrances lends a warm base rather than sweetness. If a note seems out of place, look at where it sits in the fragrance pyramid before ruling it out.

The houses to start with

Nasomatto and Orto Parisi, Alessandro Gualtieri’s two projects, are the most direct: concise compositions, no mediation, they’re either loved or disliked at first spray. Pesade explores equestrianism and leather, making it the house best suited to those looking for a fragrance that tells a story. Nishane is the broadest and easiest to explore, and the house most represented in our selection.

The Spirit of Dubai and Matin Martin bring together the oud and resins of the Arab tradition, a field where niche perfumery excels when you’re looking for something special.

As a gift

It’s the most difficult gift there is, because a fragrance never smells the same on someone else. Our rule of thumb: don’t look for what you like; look for the fragrance family of what you’ve seen him wear. If you don’t know, a woody fragrance with sandalwood is the safest choice. And if you want to be sure, our full selection is open to her too: they’re the same fragrances.

Frequently asked questions

Are there niche fragrances for men?

Almost never in the strict sense: niche houses create fragrances without assigning them to a gender, and the same composition changes depending on the wearer’s skin. This page brings together the olfactory families most often chosen by men at our counter — woody, aromatic and leather — but all the fragrances in our selection are for everyone.

What’s the easiest niche fragrance to start with?

A woody fragrance built around sandalwood: this is the raw material that makes a composition soft and comforting, and appeals to practically everyone. Vetiver, more earthy and bitter, is more distinctive but less universally appealing; oud, resinous and animalic, is best explored once you know what kind of wood you like.

Can a man wear a rose fragrance?

Yes, and it’s the norm in Middle Eastern perfumery, where rose is very much a masculine note. Blended with oud, resins and woods, it becomes dark and balsamic, far removed from the idea of a rose garden. Around twenty of our woody fragrances feature rose in their olfactory pyramid.

How long does a niche fragrance last?

More than a mainstream fragrance, thanks to its higher concentration: an extrait de parfum can remain perceptible all day. Much depends, however, on your skin — oily skin holds fragrance longer — and on the fragrance family: woody and oriental scents last longer than citrus scents, which are naturally volatile.
