Mou: the boot with visible stitching, and the rest of the collection

Mou is one of those brands you can recognize by a single detail: the thick visible stitching running along the edge of the boot, done by hand and deliberately left uneven. It's the opposite of an industrial finish, and it's why a pair of Mou looks like no other sheepskin boot.

This winter, we have 467 pairs in the boutique, almost all Eskimo: the 18, 24 and 40, the Mini Eskimo Platform, the Bounce line, slippers and, for girls, the Eskimo Kid.

L'Eskimo, and why it costs what it does

The Eskimo boot is the style that made the brand. Sheepskin inside and out, a stitched sole, and that contrasting stitching, done by hand one pair at a time: this is true artisanal craftsmanship, and you can see it in the fact that no two pairs are ever identical.

Anyone comparing them with a chain-store sheepskin boot will notice two differences straight away. First, the weight of the leather, which is more substantial. Second, the way they age: the Eskimo softens and takes the shape of the foot instead of stretching out, and after two seasons it looks better than when it was new.

This season's Eskimo styles

Over the past year, Eskimo boots have been our best-selling Mou styles. This season, we have them in Eskimo 18, Eskimo 24 and Eskimo 40 versions: with a glitter or rhinestone logo on the heel, wool-embroidered stars, buckles, or animal-print pony hair. The Mini Eskimo Platform puts the same boot on a high sole; the suede New Inner Wedge conceals a wedge inside.

Bounce, slippers and clogs

After the Eskimo styles, our best-selling line is Bounce: the Bounce Clog and the Eskimo Bounce sneaker, in double-face sheepskin with an EVA and rubber sole. The Eskimo Slipper styles are slippers with the same crochet stitching.

Mou for girls

For girls, we have Mou styles for little ones: the Eskimo Kid in double-face sheepskin with visible stitching, the Eskimo Infant for newborns, and the Eskimo Slipper Backstrap, with a strap behind the ankle. They come in whole sizes, and available sizes are listed on each product page.

How to choose your size

The sheepskin lining gives way in the first few weeks, and this is the most important thing to know before ordering: a Mou boot that feels comfortable on day one will be loose after a month. So it’s best to choose a snug fit at first, not a soft one.

If you’re between sizes, choose the smaller size for the Eskimo. For slippers, do the opposite, as they’re worn with socks and have no laces or elastic to adjust the fit. If in doubt, send us your foot length in centimeters: you’ll find instructions in our size converter.

A frank word about sheepskin. It won’t stand up to heavy rain, and no treatment can make it truly waterproof. It works well in dry snow and cold weather, but not in a downpour. If you need a shoe for the rain, consider a waterproof ankle boot instead — find one in the Timberland collection.

How to wear them

L'Eskimo works with your trousers tucked inside, never over the boot: the stitching is the reason to buy it, and covering it would be a waste. With straight-leg jeans and a long coat, it’s the combination we see most often and the one that’s hardest to get wrong.

Slides and slippers are worn with a visible sock, thick and in a contrasting color. It’s the only way a slipper works on the street: worn openly, not hidden.

The rest of the collection

Alongside its winter styles, the brand makes suede sneakers with the same visible stitching, as well as a summer line of sandals and EVA slides. These are different styles that share the same approach to craftsmanship, and you can find them here all year round. Sandals and slides also have their own page, Mou summer styles.

If you want to know everything before choosing — how they fit, how to style them, how to wash them — here’s our Eskimo guide: how they fit and which height to choose.

Frequently asked questions

Do Mou boots run large or small?

True to size, with one caveat: they have no laces or fastenings, so you can't adjust the fit afterward. Those with a high instep may find the Eskimo tighter than expected for the first few days; in this case, it's best to try them on in person or write to us before ordering.

Can Mou boots get wet?

Not much. Shearling stands up to cold and dry snow, but not heavy rain, and no treatment makes it truly waterproof. If they get wet, they should be dried away from heat sources, which would harden the leather.

What sets Mou apart from other shearling boots?

The visible stitching along the edge, done by hand one pair at a time and deliberately left irregular, and the weight of the leather, which is more substantial than that of mass-produced boots. These are also the two reasons for the price difference.

How do you clean Mou boots and slippers?

Brush them frequently with a soft-bristle brush and apply a protective suede spray before wearing them for the first time. For stains, Mou recommends a stiff-bristle brush and a sponge with lukewarm water and mild shampoo; then let them air-dry away from heat.

Are there Mou styles for girls?

Yes: the Eskimo Kid in double-face shearling with visible stitching, the Eskimo Infant for newborns, and the Eskimo Slipper Backstrap with an ankle strap.
