Mou: the boot with exposed stitching, and the rest of the collection

Mou is one of those brands you can recognize from a single detail: the chunky exposed stitching running along the edge of the boot, done by hand and deliberately left irregular. It is the opposite of industrial finishing, and the reason why a pair of Mou looks unlike any other sheepskin boot.

This winter, we have 471 pairs in the boutique, almost all Eskimo styles: the 18, 24 and 40, the Mini Eskimo Platform, the Bounce line, slippers and, for girls, the Eskimo Kid.

L'Eskimo, and why it costs what it does

The Eskimo boot is the style that made the brand. Sheepskin inside and out, a stitched sole, and that contrasting stitching, done by hand one pair at a time: this is true craftsmanship, and you can see it in the fact that no two pairs are ever identical.

Anyone comparing it with a chain-store sheepskin boot will immediately notice two differences. First, the leather is heavier and more substantial. Second, the way it ages: the Eskimo softens and takes the shape of the foot instead of becoming misshapen, and after two seasons it looks better than when it was new.

This season's Eskimo styles

Over the past year, Eskimo boots have been the best-selling styles from Mou. This season, we have them in Eskimo 18, Eskimo 24 and Eskimo 40 versions: with a glitter or rhinestone logo on the heel, wool embroidered stars, buckles, or animal-print pony hair. The Mini Eskimo Platform features the same boot on a high sole; the suede New Inner Wedge conceals a wedge inside.

Bounce slippers and clogs

After the Eskimo, our best-selling line is Bounce: the Bounce Clog and the Eskimo Bounce sneaker, made from double-face sheepskin with an EVA and rubber sole. Eskimo Slipper styles are slippers with the same crochet stitching.

Mou for girls

For girls, we have Mou styles in smaller sizes: the Eskimo Kid in double-face sheepskin with visible stitching, the Eskimo Infant for newborns, and the Eskimo Slipper Backstrap, with a strap behind the ankle. They come in whole sizes, and available sizes are listed on each product page.

How to choose your size

The sheepskin lining gives way in the first few weeks, and this is the most important thing to know before ordering: a Mou boot that feels comfortable on day one will feel loose after a month. So choose a snug fit at first, not a loose one.

If you're between two sizes, choose the smaller one for the Eskimo. For slippers, do the opposite, as they're worn with socks and have no laces or elastic to make up the difference. If you're unsure, send us your foot length in centimeters: you'll find an explanation in our size converter.

An honest word about sheepskin. It doesn't withstand heavy rain, and no treatment makes it truly waterproof. It's ideal for dry snow and cold weather, but not for a downpour. If you need a shoe for the rain, take a look at a waterproof ankle boot instead — we talk about it in the Timberland collection.

How to wear them

L'Eskimo works with trousers tucked in, never over the boot: the stitching is the reason to buy it, and covering it would be a waste. Straight-leg jeans and a long coat are the pairing we see most often, and the one that's hardest to get wrong.

Slides and slippers are worn with the socks showing, thick and in a contrasting color. It's the only way a slipper makes sense outdoors: worn openly, not hidden.

The rest of the collection

Alongside its winter styles, the brand makes sneakers in suede with the same visible stitching, as well as a summer line of sandals and EVA slides. Different styles, united by the same idea of craftsmanship, are available here all year round. Sandals and slides also have their own page, Mou summer styles.

If you want to know everything before choosing — how they fit, how to style them, how to clean them — see our Eskimo guide: how they fit and which height to choose.

Frequently asked questions

Do Mou boots run large or small?

True to size, with one caveat: they have no laces or fastenings, so the fit cannot be adjusted afterward. Those with a high instep may find the Eskimo tighter than expected during the first few days; in this case, it is best to try them on in person or contact us before ordering.

Can Mou boots get wet?

Not much. Sheepskin can withstand cold and dry snow, but not heavy rain, and no treatment makes it truly waterproof. If they get wet, dry them away from heat sources, which can harden the leather.

What sets Mou apart from other sheepskin boots?

The visible stitching along the edge, hand-sewn one pair at a time and intentionally left irregular, and the weight of the leather, which is thicker than that used for mass-produced boots. These are also the two reasons for the price difference.

How do you clean Mou boots and slippers?

Brush them regularly with a soft-bristle brush, and apply a protective suede spray before their first outing. For stains, Mou recommends a stiff-bristle brush and a sponge with lukewarm water and mild shampoo; then leave them to air-dry, away from heat.

Are Mou styles available for girls?

Yes: the Eskimo Kid in double-face sheepskin with visible stitching, the Eskimo Infant for newborns, and the Eskimo Slipper Backstrap with an ankle strap.
