A women's hat is chosen based on two things that do not show in photos: whether the fibre feels scratchy, and whether it leaves your hair as you styled it. Everything else — colour, logo, shape — comes later, and is much less likely to go wrong.

What we carry, and what it is made of

Pinko works wool with a jacquard logo, knitted into the fabric rather than applied: it does not come loose and does not add bulk to the forehead. Emporio Armani uses ribbed virgin wool with a turn-up, the warmest style. MC2 Saint Barth and Dondup focus on cashmere and soft blends.

Lacoste uses brushed wool, finely carded to make contact less rough: it is the model we recommend if you are unsure whether wool will irritate. adidas Originals and New Era cover the sporty side, with smooth, close-fitting beanies.

If you are giving it as a gift. The hat is one size — the knit adapts to a head circumference of 55 to 60 centimetres — so it is one of the few garments where you do not have to guess a size. The only thing to know is whether the recipient can tolerate wool against their skin: when in doubt, choose cashmere or an acrylic blend.

The turn-up and hair

The turn-up doubles the fabric over the forehead and ears and is the style for truly cold weather. The smooth beanie is lighter, fits close to the head and can be removed without leaving a mark — which, with long hair, makes the difference between wearing it and keeping it in your bag.

Something we notice in the boutique: people with long hair tend to choose a slightly looser hat and wear it further back, on the nape. Those with short hair prefer a close-fitting style with a turn-up. It is not a rule, but it is a useful starting point.

What to wear it with

A hat in the same color as the scarf is the safe choice; a contrasting hat is the one that stands out. Ribbed knitwear works well over a wool coat; over a technical puffer jacket, a smooth beanie works better, as it does not add volume where the hood already does.

Almost always one size fits all: the stretchy knit accommodates head circumferences from 55 to 60 centimeters, covering the vast majority of adult heads. Only some structured styles come in different sizes, which will be indicated in the product details.

Which beanie won't ruin my hairstyle?

A smooth, slightly loose beanie worn back on the nape rather than pulled down over the forehead. Very snug styles and tight ribbed ones flatten the hair more. The fiber also matters: cashmere and brushed wool glide over the hair, while rough acrylic creates more friction and static.

Is a wool beanie itchy?

It depends on the fiber diameter: below 19 microns, almost no one notices it; above 23, they do. Cashmere is almost never itchy, brushed wool only slightly, and coarse wool more so. If you have sensitive skin on your forehead, opt for cashmere or a blend with acrylic.

Do the beanie and scarf have to match?

They don't have to match. Matching is the safe, polished choice, especially over a neutral-colored coat. Contrasting is the choice that stands out, and it works well if one of the two picks up a color already present in the outfit - the bag, lining, or gloves.

Can it be machine-washed?

On the wool cycle at 30 degrees and inside a closed pillowcase, yes. Never use hot water or a high spin cycle: wool felts and the beanie shrinks by one size, with no way to reverse it. Lay flat to dry, resting it on something round to prevent the shape from flattening.
