The coat for fall-winter 2026-2027 is long, wool, and has a soft shoulder. Three details that had disappeared for a few seasons are back in this style: a wide double-breasted front, a waist belt, and a hood. For men, the choice is simpler and comes down almost entirely to one question — single-breasted or double-breasted. Below, you’ll find the five styles that really matter, how to recognize them in store, and which one is right for you.
We’re not here to tell you about the runways; we’re telling you about the coats that have arrived in the boutique this season, because that’s where you can see what brands really believe people will wear. For a complete overview of all outerwear — puffer jackets, shearling, bomber jackets — see our fall-winter outerwear guide; this page is just about coats.
1. The long wool coat, with a soft shoulder
It’s the season’s standout style, recognizable by two details. The length falls below the knee, and the shoulder is unstructured: it drapes softly instead of ending in a squared-off shape. There’s a practical reason for this as well as an aesthetic one, and we often explain it in store: a long coat also covers your outfit, making it the perfect evening option without needing to change.
For long styles, Marella and Pinko stand out. The Marella Andina is made from double-faced wool, meaning two layers woven together: it keeps you warm without a heavy lining and drapes straight. The Pinko Verici is a long wool and cashmere coat. The Marella MLLPAVIDO is made from virgin wool and cashmere, and it’s the one we recommend if you want a single coat that will last ten years.
A note about the fabric, because it’s the question we’re asked most: “cashmere” on a coat’s label almost always means a wool and cashmere blend, not pure cashmere. You can feel the difference, and see it in the price. The exact composition is listed on each item’s product page, and that’s the only place worth checking.

2. The double-breasted coat is back, and this time it's oversized
This year's double-breasted coat isn't the fitted, military-inspired style of recent years. It's roomier, with larger lapels and more generous shoulders, and looks good worn open or closed. It's the piece that makes even jeans and a sweater look elegant.
For women, the reference is the Tartina by MM Max Mara, a double-breasted wool cloth coat: the quintessential classic coat, one that never goes out of style because it doesn't chase trends. Marella gives it a shorter cut, with double-breasted blousons in a wool blend and a bouclé wool coat with lapels and a texture you can see from afar.
For men, the double-breasted coat is the choice for anyone who wants to stand out without going over the top. The Bharnaba has peak lapels, pointed upwards, the most sartorial detail you can have on a coat; the GI Capri has patch pockets, giving it a more relaxed feel that's easy to wear during the day.
3. The waist belt
The belt is back because it solves the problem of an oversized coat: if you don't want a straight silhouette from shoulder to hem, cinch it in and instantly create shape. It's also the detail that makes a statement coat wearable, even if you're petite.
There's plenty of choice here. Pinko's Citiso is made from double-faced cloth and comes with a belt; Marella offers the wool-cloth Pulcino, the wool-blend double-faced Polka, and the Eolico, designed specifically to define the waist. Emporio Armani offers a coat with notched lapels and a belt in a alpaca blend: alpaca is lighter than wool for the same warmth, and its longer fibers give the garment a soft, almost hazy look.
4. The hood on a coat
It's the most practical and least talked-about trend of the season. A hooded wool-cloth coat is the answer if, in November, you don't want to choose between the elegance of a coat and the comfort of a puffer: the wool stays, while the hood offers protection in the rain.
Marella offers the Landa in wool cloth, with or without a belt. Blubianco has a herringbone wool coat with a hood, in more relaxed sizes. These are the two styles we recommend if you live in the city and get around on foot.
5. The evening coat: checks, jacquard and fur
Alongside the everyday coat, the evening coat is back, doing the job of a dress. Here, Twinset leads the way with a check wool-blend coat with sequins, a jacquard wool-blend coat, and poncho coats with fur trim. Wear them over a long dress, and enjoy the one-size-fits-all convenience.
For those who want volume without wool, there's the faux fur coat with a collar: warm, lightweight, and made without animal fur.
Men's coats: single-breasted or double-breasted
For men, trends matter less than structure, and the choice almost always comes down to two options. The single-breasted coat goes with everything: over a suit for the office, over a turtleneck sweater, or over a sweatshirt at the weekend. The clean-cut Alessandro Dell'Acqua style, with no details that date it, is the one we recommend if you're buying just one. The double-breasted coat is more formal and distinctive, and suits broader shoulders better.
Two pieces that aren't coats but are constantly requested as alternatives: the Peuterey checked wool jacket with a removable front panel, which extends the season by a month, and the Murdo leather jacket with a shearling collar. The full men's selection is in men's coats.

How to choose (the boutique’s advice)
The rule that’s least likely to go wrong: choose a coat with the days you’ll wear it most in mind, not the coldest day of the year. A good wool coat can be worn from October to March; for the two weeks of real frost, there’s the down jacket.
Three checks to make in store or as soon as your package arrives: the shoulder should follow yours and not extend more than a finger’s width beyond it; with a jacket underneath, you should be able to raise your arms without pulling across the back; the length should work with the shoes you’ll actually wear, not the ones you have on that day.
For sizing and reading the label, we’ve written a separate, detailed guide: how to choose a women’s coat. If you’re unsure about the type of garment, coat, down jacket or jacket can help you decide.
Where to look in our selection
All women’s coats are in women’s coats, and men’s styles in men’s coats. If you already have a brand in mind, Marella has the widest selection this season, MM Max Mara has the classic double-breasted coat, and Twinset has evening coats. We are authorized retailers for all the brands you’ll find here: what you see on the page is what we have in the store, in Roccapiemonte.
Frequently asked questions
Which coats are in style for winter 2026-2027?
The long wool coat with soft shoulders is the style of the season. Also back are the roomy double-breasted coat, the belted waist and the hooded wool cloth coat; for evening, checks, jacquard and fur trims.
What coat length is in style this year?
Long, below the knee. It’s the most practical length because it covers a dress, too. If you prefer a shorter style, there’s plenty of choice in blousons and mid-thigh double-breasted coats.
Should you choose a double-breasted or single-breasted coat?
A single-breasted coat goes with everything and is the best choice if you’re buying just one. A double-breasted coat is more formal and distinctive, and suits those with broad shoulders or anyone looking for a statement piece.
Is the belted coat still in style?
Yes, it’s back this year. The belt makes even a roomy coat easy to wear, defining the waist instead of leaving a straight volume from shoulder to hem.
What does “cashmere” mean on a coat label?
Almost always a blend of wool and cashmere, not pure cashmere. The percentage is stated in the composition: that’s how you can tell how much cashmere is really there.
