Outerwear is the category we spend the most on and get wrong most often, because we try it on in a shop at twenty degrees and wear it at five. For autumn-winter 2026-2027, the good news is that the trends are moving towards wearable pieces: long, soft lines, controlled volumes and materials you can recognise by touch.

1. The wool coat, and this time it's long

The season's coat falls below the knee and has a soft, unstructured shoulder. It marks the return of a silhouette that had been overlooked for ten years in favour of shorter styles with waist belts, and there is a practical reason as well as an aesthetic one: a long coat covers the dress too, so it takes you from day to evening without requiring a change. In pure wool, it keeps you warmer than its weight would suggest; in cashmere blends, the feel changes noticeably even at ten per cent. 2. The puffer jacket no longer looks like mountaineering gear

The novelty is not the down jacket itself, but the fact that it can finally be worn in the city without looking like you are on a day trip. The insulation is thinner and the quilting smaller, keeping the volume contained; colors move beyond black toward muddy tones and burgundy. The knitted collar, very much in evidence this year, helps remove the technical look that once made down jackets incompatible with elegant trousers. 3. Shearling and teddy: the outerwear that keeps you warm and gets noticed

Shearling and its synthetic versions are the most-worn outerwear of the coming winter, and the reason is that they solve the opposite problem to the coat: they are not meant to look elegant, but to keep you warm while still looking dressed. Real shearling is heavy and lasts twenty years; teddy and faux fur cost a third as much and can be washed. The rule for getting it right is to keep it short if you are petite, because the volume of the pile adds visual inches that a long line multiplies. Find them in women's fur and shearling.

4. The bomber grows up and becomes a serious piece

For years, it was a young man’s jacket. This year it comes in nappa leather, wool and faux fur, with broader shoulders and a hem that stops at the waist: it has become the way to wear a jacket without wearing a blazer. It works because it is the only short outerwear piece that looks good with both jeans and relaxed trousers, and because the elasticated hem defines the waist even when the volume above is generous. The territory is that of women's jackets and men's jackets.

5. The check is back, but oversized

This season’s check is large-scale and two-tone, not the small Prince of Wales check of past years. It works on a wool cloth coat because the large scale holds up across the surface: a small check on a long garment becomes muddled and looks grey from a distance. That’s why a large check also suits those who usually avoid it - it creates a pattern, not bulk. If you want to try it without taking risks, start with a coat in two neutral tones and keep the rest plain.

How to choose (the boutique’s advice)

The rule that gets it least wrong at the counter: buy outerwear with the day you’ll wear it most in mind, not the coldest day of the year. Anyone who buys a down jacket for -10 degrees ends up never wearing it, because at five degrees you sweat. A good wool coat that you can wear from October to March is better, along with a second technical piece for the two truly freezing weeks.

What size should you choose for a coat?

Choose a coat size based on the shoulders, not the waist. If the shoulder seam falls where your shoulder ends, the size is right even if the rest seems roomy: a coat should accommodate a sweater underneath. If the shoulder drops onto the arm, the size is too large and cannot be altered.

Is pure wool or a cashmere blend better?

It depends on how much you will wear it. Pure wool is more durable and better suited to daily wear; a cashmere blend feels softer to the touch and is warmer for the same weight, but felts sooner in areas subject to friction. Below ten percent cashmere, the difference to the touch is slight; above that, you can feel it.

How can you tell if a down jacket is high quality?

By pressing it down and seeing whether it springs back on its own within a few seconds. This shows that the filling has loft, the property that retains warmth. A down jacket that stays flat after compression provides little warmth, regardless of how thick it appears when new.

How much should you spend on a long-lasting outerwear piece?

Under two hundred euros, you can find bombers and padded jackets; a good wool coat and a down jacket with genuine filling cost over three hundred. This is the piece worth spending more on, because it is worn every day for five months.
